Heel Pain During Pregnancy

The miracle of birth is a wonderful experience. However, the process leading up to the actual birth can be difficult for many women. Often women adjust to different changes during pregnancy. Many of these changes are hormonal, however some are physical. One physical issue that is common during pregnancy is heel pain.

A Common Complaint

A lot of doctors report that heel pain is a common complaint among women that are pregnant. During pregnancy, a woman's center of gravity shifts as she begins to gain weight. Her new weight-bearing stance applies more pressure on the knees and feet. Often this causes them to over-pronate. And, because of the added weight, pain at the heel, arch, and ball of the foot is normal and can be relatively uncomfortable.

Plantar Fasciitis

One of the main conditions these women actually suffer from is plantar fasciitis. Because of the excess weight during pregnancy, they put more pressure on the fat pad at the bottom of their feet. This can lead to inflammation and cause them to feel the heel pain that is common among individuals that suffer with plantar fasciitis.

Treating And Preventing Heel Pain

In order to treat the problem and prevent it from getting worse, pregnant women should stay off their feet. Also, elevating the feet can be helpful. It will increase blood flow and decrease inflammation. Lastly, proper shoes are encouraged during pregnancy. Comfort should be a priority. Therefore, if you need to invest in pads that will make your feet more comfortable, do so.
